What to Wear to Your Zion Family Photo Session

A no-stress Zion family photo style guide from a local photographer who gets it

Let’s be honest—figuring out what to wear for your family photo session can feel more intense than planning the actual trip to Zion. But I promise, it doesn’t have to be that way.

As a local photographer who specializes in Zion family photos, I’m here to help you feel confident, comfortable, and fully yourselves. No stiff outfits, no forced smiles, and absolutely no matching white shirts (please, for the love of good photos, don’t do that).

Whether you’re adventuring with toddlers, teens, or the whole crew, here’s how to choose outfits that feel like you and look amazing on camera.

Start with this: wear something that feels like you

The best thing you can wear? Something you actually like.

If you’re uncomfortable or feel like you’re dressed up as someone else, it’ll show in the photos. I want you to feel at ease, have fun, and look back at your photos thinking, “Yep. That’s so us.”

  • If you hate dresses, skip them.
  • If your kid wants to wear their favorite sneakers, let them.
  • If you want to bring your dog and wear your hiking boots—yes please.

We’re not aiming for perfection—we’re aiming for connection.

Coordinate your colors (but don’t match)

Here’s the deal: coordination = good, matching = not so much. Matching outfits can make everyone blend together and lose that natural feel. Instead, focus on choosing 3–4 complementary colors that create a cohesive vibe.

Zion-friendly color palettes:

  • Terracotta, olive, cream, tan
  • Sage green, warm gray, sand, off-white
  • Dusty blue, burnt orange, golden yellow
  • Earthy neutrals mixed with a pop of color

Layer in texture with gauzy fabrics, linen, knit sweaters, or denim for extra visual interest. And please avoid logos, neon colors, or anything that screams “Disney souvenir shirt.” Here is a Pinterest board with some inspiration on coordination.

Dress for the season in Zion

Zion’s weather has some big feelings. Make sure your outfits match the vibe AND the forecast.

Spring & fall

These are prime times for Zion family photos. Think soft layers, long sleeves, cozy cardigans, and flowy fabrics that move in the breeze.

Summer

It’s hot, but still beautiful. Go for breathable fabrics like cotton and linen. Sundresses, short sleeves, and comfy sandals are great. Just avoid black—it absorbs heat and makes you sweat more (no one wants that).

Winter

Yes, people do get family photos in Zion in the winter, and it’s stunning. Bundle up in cute coats, neutral sweaters, beanies, and boots. Bonus: fewer crowds!

Go in depth about Zion’s season—

Keep the kids comfortable

If your kiddo is miserable in their outfit, we’ll have a harder time getting those sweet, natural smiles. For your Zion family photos, we want the opposite of that! Pick clothes that are:

  • Soft and breathable
  • Easy to move in
  • Reflective of their personality

Let them be themselves. If that means wearing their favorite hat or a funky pattern—they’ll feel more confident and have more fun. (And honestly, it’ll probably become one of your favorite photos.)

Pro tip: Bring a backup outfit. Just in case of spills, blowouts, or spontaneous puddle jumping.

Elevate the look with a few simple accessories

No need to overdo it, but a few little extras can add personality and depth to your photos.

Consider:

  • A felt hat or wide-brimmed sun hat
  • A textured blanket to cuddle up in
  • Meaningful jewelry
  • A flowy scarf or wrap
  • Cute socks and boots for kids

Just leave behind the flashy watches, hair ties, sunglasses, or anything that distracts from your beautiful faces.

Shoes matter (but they don’t need to be fancy)

We’re likely going to be walking on sand, slickrock, or trails—so choose shoes that are practical and still photo-friendly.

Great options:

  • Leather boots
  • Closed-toe sandals
  • Classic sneakers
  • Barefoot at the end (if you’re feeling it)

High heels? Hard pass. We’re not going to prom—we’re going on an adventure.

Still not sure? Bring options!

I’m always happy to give feedback before we start shooting. If you’re torn between outfits, bring both! I can help you decide what works best with the light, location, and vibe.

FAQ: You’ve got questions, I’ve got answers

What if my kid refuses to wear what I picked?

Let them help choose! Offer two options you’re okay with and let them decide. Kids are way more cooperative when they feel in control—and even if they show up in their superhero gear, we’ll make it work.

Is matching outfits a bad idea?

Not bad, but not ideal. Matching can flatten out the visual interest in your photos. Coordinating with a shared color palette creates a more natural, elevated look.

Can we be casual?

Please do. Zion is casual, rugged, and beautiful. You can absolutely show up in jeans, boots, and a cozy sweater. Don’t feel like you have to dress up unless you want to.

Can we wear patterns?

Yes—with moderation. Stick to subtle, larger-scale prints. One or two patterns in the group works great. Too many competing prints can get distracting.

What should we avoid?

– Logos and text
– Neon colors
– Uncomfortable clothes (especially for kids)
– Overly trendy styles you’ll regret next year

Should I bring anything else?

Optional but helpful:
– Water + snacks
– A blanket
– Wipes/tissues
– A spare outfit for the kids
– Good vibes (okay, not optional)

What if the weather turns?

I’ve seen it all. Cloudy? Perfect. Windy? Dramatic. If it looks stormy, we’ll chat about a backup plan or adjust timing. Zion is always photogenic—even in moody light.

Can I get outfit feedback ahead of time?

Absolutely. Feel free to send me photos or ideas—I’m always happy to help you feel confident in what you’re wearing.
