How to Secure a Permit for Angels Landing

Few places in the world are as iconic as Angels Landing in Zion National Park. With its jaw-dropping views, narrow ridge, and sheer cliffs, it’s a bucket-list hike for adventurers and romantics alike. Whether you’re planning to propose, capture epic engagement photos, or immortalize a “just married” moment during your elopement day, having a professional zion photographer on this unforgettable trail can make your experience even more extraordinary. And guess what? I’m that photographer. With over 7 years of experience living in and exploring Zion, I know this hike like the back of my hand (but don’t worry, I’ll keep my eyes open while hiking!). Here’s how to secure an Angels Landing permit and why hiring me to join you is one of the best decisions you’ll make.

Photographer & Guide

I’m Jaymie, a Zion-based elopement and adventure photographer who’s hiked Angels Landing more times than I can count. With years of experience working in and around Zion National Park, I help couples plan meaningful wedding days—and epic photo sessions—on some of the most iconic trails in the Southwest.

Why You Need a Permit for Angels Landing

To preserve the delicate environment and ensure visitor safety, the National Park Service (NPS) requires all hikers to have a permit to hike Angels Landing beyond Scout Lookout. This system controls the number of people on the trail and enhances the experience for those lucky enough to snag a spot.

The three ways to get a permit:

  1. Seasonal Lottery: This is the primary way most people secure a permit. It’s run in advance for each upcoming season.
  2. Day-Before Lottery: If you missed the seasonal lottery, there’s still a chance! You can apply for the day-before lottery and try your luck at getting a last-minute permit.
  3. Commercial Guide: If you book a guided tour with an authorized commercial guide, they’ll handle the permitting process for you. This is a great option if you’d rather leave the logistics to someone else.

If you’re planning to bring a zion photographer (which you absolutely should), you’ll need to secure a permit for them too. Since each permit is tied to an individual hiker, you’ll want to plan for this from the start—and I’ll be there to guide you through it.

Step 1: How to Apply for the Permit Lottery

The application process for the Angels Landing lottery is simple but competitive, so it’s essential to know the key details.

1. Seasonal Lottery (Best Option for Early Planners)

  • When to Apply: Lottery applications open several months before each hiking season.
  • Seasons: Spring (March – May), Summer (June – August), Fall (September – November), Winter (December – February).
  • How to Apply: Visit recreation.gov, search for “Angels Landing Permit” and submit your application.
  • What You Need: Choose your preferred hiking date and up to 7 alternate dates.
  • Results: You’ll be notified via email if you’re selected, and you’ll need to pay a small permit fee to confirm your spot.

2. Day-Before Lottery (For Last-Minute Planners)

  • When to Apply: The lottery opens at 12:01 a.m. MT the day before your intended hike and closes at 3:00 p.m. MT the same day.
  • How to Apply: Visit recreation.gov to enter the lottery.
  • What You Need: Be ready to hike the next day! Winners are notified by email at 4:00 p.m. MT the day before the hike.

3. Book a Commercial Guide

Booking a commercial guide (you can actually request me as a guide though Zion Adventures) is a great way to simplify the process. Your guide will handle permits, offer trail expertise, and ensure you’re hiking safely. This is especially helpful for those who are nervous about navigating the narrow ridge sections of the trail. Be sure to ask if the guide’s permit covers your photographer as well—this may vary depending on the guide’s policies.

Step 2: Don’t Forget a Permit for Your Photographer

If you’re planning a proposal, engagement, or wedding photo session on Angels Landing, you’ll need to secure a separate permit for your photographer. Since permits are linked to individual hikers, your photographer’s permit must be secured just like any other hiker. Whether you’re entering the seasonal lottery, the day-before lottery, or booking with a guide, make sure you plan for an extra permit.

This step is crucial, but it’s absolutely worth it. As someone who’s hiked and photographed Angels Landing more times than I can count, I’ll help you through the process and make sure everything goes smoothly.

What You Need to Know About the Hike

Before you hit that “apply” button, it’s important to know what you’re getting into. Angels Landing is no walk in the park—it’s a challenging and thrilling adventure. Here are the essential stats and tips you’ll want to know:

  • Trail Length: 5.4 miles round trip
  • Elevation Gain: 1,488 feet
  • Hiking Time: 4-5 hours, depending on pace and crowd conditions
  • Difficulty: Strenuous (yes, it’s tough!)

Start Early (Seriously, Do It!)

If you’re hiking Angels Landing in the summer, early mornings are your best friend. Temperatures can soar past 100°F by midday, and the sun’s intensity is no joke. Beat the heat and the crowds by starting at sunrise. Not only will you have a cooler, more enjoyable experience, but you’ll also get that glorious golden light that’s perfect for photos (see where I’m going with this?).

My Favorite Time to Hike

While summer has its perks, my personal favorite time to hike Angels Landing is in the winter, especially when there’s snow (this is definitely the more spicy option!). The crowds are thinner, the air is crisp, and the snow-dusted cliffs create a magical backdrop that’s nothing short of breathtaking. If you’re up for a little adventure (and you’re properly prepared for icy spots with added traction for your shoes), it’s an experience you’ll never forget—and the photos? Absolutely next level.

Is It Worth It? Absolutely.

Yes, you’ll sweat. Yes, your legs will burn. But when you’re standing at the summit of Angels Landing, overlooking the Zion Canyon below, every step will have been worth it. Add in a professional photographer capturing every unforgettable moment, and you’ve got memories that’ll last a lifetime. And to be honest, even if you don’t win the permit, you’re still allowed to hike to Scout Lookout. I think this is also incredibly worth the hike!

  2. Focus on the Experience, Not the Camera
    • Let me handle the photos so you can be fully present with your partner. You’ll experience the thrill of the hike, the awe of the views, and the intimacy of the moment without worrying about selfies or setting up a tripod.
