A Unique Zion Proposal

Zion Proposal

Let me tell you how I started photographing couples and this Zion Proposal. Before moving to Mammoth Lakes, CA I was living and working in the small town nestled at the gates of Zion National Park. My primary job was working as a guide for Zion Adventure Company. I took people on hiking, canyoneering, and climbing experiences around Zion and the greater area. I got to call that place home for three years and miss it daily. My favorite time of year to be there was the winters.

Winter in Zion National Park is unique—it’s quieter than any other season, slower, and when it snows in the desert it feels a little extra magical. My last winter there I brought my camera with me on my trips and gave my clients some incredible photos. On my days off I would do some work for another photographer in town, Kate Hope over at The Wild Within Us.

On this particular weekend, she hired me to shoot this zion proposal for her! I was instantly excited since the weather was perfect—it has just snowed so everything was soft and light. Kate connected me with the proposer and we hatched a plan. I would meet them in the trailhead parking lot and I would follow behind them, taking my sweet time and being as unsuspecting as possible.

And it worked! I was there to capture the Zion Proposal as it happened and the joy that followed.

A few notes on how to make your winter visit to Zion successful: Check to see what trails are open or closed before you make your plans. Have a Plan B ready in case you arrive and can’t do your first choice! There are SO many beautiful places in Zion, don’t worry if the Narrows are closed you can find another incredible hike. Be sure you get the right gear! You most likely will only need micro-traction for your shoes if there is snow or ice on the trails.
